Asda poaches Iceland CCO as new ecommerce boss

Asda has appointed Iceland group chief customer, marketing and digital officer David Devany as its new vice president for ecommerce.

Devany brings over 25 years of experience in ecommerce, digital and marketing to the role, and has held his current role at the frozen food retailer since 2020.

In his new position at Asda, Devany will focus on growing the grocer’s presence in the online market.

The appointment comes as the supermarket giant recently revealed it had achieved record online grocery sales in 2023, delivering 39 million orders with a sales value of £3.2bn.

Asda also ended the year with its highest ever online grocery market share of 20.8%.

Speaking of the new appointment, Asda co-owner Mohsin Issa said: “David has extensive experience and a proven-track record in retail within the UK, as well as across Europe and the USA. David’s remit will cover the entirety of our ecommerce business, and his appointment will play an important part as we continue to grow our online grocery offering.”

Devany added: “This is an exciting time to be joining the team. With Asda having already made strong headway in the ecommerce space, I am looking forward to joining and continuing to grow the business’s online offering.”

The appointment of Devany marks the latest in a string of new hires over the past few months, with Morrisons exec Matt Kelleher appointed chief digital officer. He will begin his role at Asda this month to oversee ecommerce and data functions, as well as lead the technology function.

Lidl chief operating officer Matt Heslop will also join the business in the coming months to lead the stores and depots operation to help accelerate Asda Express’ position in the £40bn convenience market.
