Morrisons strikes cancelled as staff win pension dispute

Morrisons workers have called off strikes after hundreds of warehouse and logistic workers in Cheshire and Yorkshire accepted new terms and conditions over pensions, pay and working conditions.

The workers were set to take part in strike action over proposed changes to their pension contributions which would have left them “hundreds of pounds a year worse off”, says Unite Union.

The new offer has seen the supermarket giant agree that workers can contribute the same amount of presently towards their pension.

Alongside this, new improved benefits include a new Service Award scheme which will pay up to £350 for long-service milestones and from 1 July, employees will get a 9% increase on all rates of pay including weekend incentive premiums and freezer allowance with the existing additional anti-social hours shift pay maintained.

In addition, it is understood that Morrisons is reviewing conduct reviews of “pick rates” and job roles with involvement from the union.

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “This is a great win for our members at Morrisons and shows the real power of a union in the workplace.

“I’m delighted they have achieved their goals and that the supermarket has seen sense and come up with an acceptable outcome.”
