Jacob’s Cream Crackers cuts plastic packaging by 78%

Global snacking company Pladis has changed the packaging across its Jacob’s Cream Crackers boxes to reduce plastic by 78%.

In partnership with sustainable packaging manufacturer DS Smith, the new packaging, which is already on-shelf, will limit the amount of plastic waste while retaining the tamper proof seal.

Pladis UK and Ireland packaging director David Guy said: “Redesigning our packaging was a big moment for us, especially as Jacob’s is such an iconic brand which customers know and love.

“We were delighted to work with DS Smith, and they really hit our brief, finding a solution which worked with our current manufacturing set up without compromising on branding.”

DS Smith’s Paul Bridge added that the change, which has saved over 373,248kg of CO2 so far, came as “now more than ever, consumers are concerned about the amount of plastic in their packaging.”

“The challenge with attempting to cut plastic out of packaging often means it can compromise the design. By applying our unique Circular Design Metrics, we came up with a solution that ensured that we ended up with a finished product that had 78% less plastic, while retaining the same high-quality print as the previous packaging.”

It comes as Sainsbury’s also unveiled a move to more sustainable packaging today (11 June) as the grocer is switching from plastic to pulp cardboard trays for its own-brand salmon and trout products in a UK retailer first – a move expected to reduce plastic by 70%.

The new packaging, which is made from sugarcane pulp and lined with polyethylene film, is set to save 346 tonnes of plastic a year.
